Dont Quit

DON’T QUIT

A few years ago my mother gave me a coin that had a poem engraved on it.

The poem was as follows;

“When things go wrong as they sometimes will, when the road you’re trudging
seems all uphill, when the funds are low
and debts are high, And you want to smile
but have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit, rest if you must but don’t you quit.”

Up until the time that she gave me that coin I had quit everything that I started in my life and never seen anything through. I quit school early, and then quit the apprenticeship I started in order to get out of school.

My life was a series of starting things but never seeing anything through which made me feel totally worthless.

Because of all my quitting I was totally depressed and thought I would never be able to change or improve my situation.

I hit rock bottom, I was totally overwhelmed as where to start looking for a better life and so I simply started to agree to everything that people asked me to do. I thought; nothing can be any worse than what I’m already feeling!

My brother asked me to run a 5km race with him and I agreed. I had one goal – Not to quit.

I won’t forget that race for the rest of my life, thinking to myself; maybe I’m not a quitter after all?

That race changed my life.

Each week I started pushing myself a little further with my fitness – 5km, 6km, 7km, 10km – I still hadn’t quit.

Maybe I can do more, maybe there is more to my life.

I ran 3 marathons, had my first boxing match and became a pilot that year.

It was epic, and in the 4 years that followed – well they were exceptional too.

I pushed myself physically to change my mindset and to prove things to myself that I never thought were possible.

And that’s why I encourage you to start too.

It’s not about getting fit, it’s about the mindset that you can develop. It’s about seeing what you just achieved and using that as fuel to overcome other obstacles in your life too.

It’s never about achieving a goal, is about who you become while trying to achieve the goal.

So I encourage you to set some small goals for yourself, to push the boundaries of who you are because you my friend are not the quitter you think you are.
