Cycle Across Australia 2018

On the 6th of September I will be starting what is surely to be my biggest challenge to date, a 5100km Self Sufficient Solo bike ride across Australia.

I will be starting in Byron Bay – Australia’s Easternmost point and cycling across the continent to reach Steep Point in Shark Bay which is Australia’s Westernmost point.

I am aiming to cycle around 130 – 150km per day and hope that the trip will take me around 40 – 45 days in total to complete. However I am overcoming a recent injury in which I herniatted 5 discs in my lower back, so I will be monitoring that throughout and may not manage to cycle the estimated distance everyday. Aside from that some rest days will be required and I plan to take a complete day of rest every 7 – 10 days.

I will be travelling alone without the aid of a support crew and will be fully equiped to make any repairs that may be needed along the way. I will also be carrying everything I need for the trip on my bike, including my tent, sleeping bag, cooking equipment, clothing and water.

Here is an exact list of what I will be carrying with me for the trip:

  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Blow up pillow
  • Quick dry towel
  • 1 Steel mug
  • 1 Pot/Pan
  • 1 Screw top stove + gas refill
  • 1 Rain jacket
  • 1 Synthetic insulated jacket
  • 1 Pair insulated gloves
  • 1 Pair shoes to cycle in + to wear daily
  • Bike repair kit including spare tube, gear cable, spoke replacement, Allen keys and spanners
  • 2x Pairs of padded cycling shorts
  • 3x Pairs of boxer shorts
  • 2x T-shirts
  • 2x Skivvy long sleeve shirts
  • 1 Long pants
  • 4x pairs of socks
  • Food; Oats for breakfast – tuna, banana and beans for lunch, pasta for dinner
  • Water;  6 – 8 litres per day

My total baggage and equipment will weigh an additional 20 – 30 kilos depending on food and water supplies at the time of cycling. Water tends to be the heaviest necessity but I plan to carry as little water as possible to save weight if there are supplies along the route.

I plan to start cycling at around 7am everyday and finish around 1 hour from dark to allow me enough time to set up camp for the night stopping only once or twice during the day to cook myself some lunch and to have a quick stretch!

In my efforts I am raising much needed awareness and funding for the Irish Support Agency of Sydney and NSW Australia. These guys provide an excellent service to those of the Irish Community in NSW who find themselves in situations of crisis and distress. A full list of their services can be found on their website – http://www.irishsuppo

With the growing number of tragedies and need for the ongoing service of the Irish Support Agency, any donations would be greatly appreciated with 100% of all donations going directly towards helping their clients. Donations can be made via our charity Fundraiser; found here – https://give.everydayhero.com
